The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has said that journalists and the mass media in the country have a critical role to play in the success of the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as they have the task of educating the public on the activities of government towards delivering on government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

The Director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Emmanuel Igbinosun, made this assertion on Monday at the One-Day Workshop for Labour Correspondents on Strategic Reportage of the Mandate of the Ministry – Job Creation/Employment Generation.

In a remark, the Acting Permanent Secretary said, as one of the eight-point agenda of President Tinubu administration, tackling unemployment is central to the success of the current government, adding that every effort and policy of government need adequate publicity for public awareness.

According to Igbinosun, “The media, as dependable allies of government in national development, need to report on every activities of government effectively.

“I therefore enjoin you to work in concert with the federal government in achieving its agenda of generating employment, through in-depth and knowledge-based reportage of government’s efforts and policies in that area.”

Speaking on the importance of the workshop, the Acting Permanent Secretary noted that the seminar would go a long way to increase the understanding of Labour Correspondents of the Ministry’s responsibility of initiating and implementing the employment and wages policies of the Federal Government.

He pointed out that the workshop will also examine the policy initiatives deployed to boost employment generation in the country, such as the National Employment Policy, and National Electronic Labour Exchange, NELEX, which can be accessed at nelex.gov.ng

He said, “The workshop is expected to deepen the knowledge of the Labour correspondents on these areas of the Ministry’s mandate, as well as update them on its activities, programmes and achievements, aimed at improved reportage.

“The workshop flows from the understanding of the importance of disseminating correct and strategic information on the activities of government in different sectors in order to avoid misperception. This could be achieved through reportage framed by an in-depth knowledge of the functions of the various government organisations.

“The workshop is also in recognition of the significant role of the media as a strategic partner to the ministry, in actualizing its mandate and delivering on its services. This is because without effective publicity, the knowledge and the impact of the programmes and activities of the Ministry would be lost on the public.

“An aspect of the mandate of the Ministry is employment generation and the workshop will focus on deepening the knowledge of the Labour correspondents in the functions of the Ministry in achieving that. This is for the purpose of ensuring strategic and effective reportage of the Ministry’s delivery on this area of its mandate.

“I therefore enjoin you to work in concert with the federal government in achieving its agenda of generating employment, through in-depth and knowledge-based reportage of government’s efforts and policies in that area.”
