World Teachers’ Day: UBEB, FCT charges teachers on best practices


Director and Acting Secretary, Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB in the Federal Capital, FCT has charged teachers to put in their best in discharging their duties and responsibilities.

Bako, gave the charge yesterday while speaking to our correspondent in an interview in commmoration of the world teachers’ day celebration in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He urged teachers across the country to reciprocate the guesture accorded them by the government, saying that “to whom much is given, much is expected”.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday approved a special salary scale for teachers in the country. He also increased the years of service for teacher from 35 to 40 years.

The Acting Secretary noted that with the reviewed service years for teachers, coupled with the new salary scale approved by the government, teacher will definitely deliver to the best of their knowledge.

According to him, “If you read Mr.President’s speech today, incentive is going to be given to teachers, which mathematics is inclusive. That will make many people study mathematics at NCE level and degree level as well so that they can came back and give thier best in the class room.”

Speaking on the issue of over population of students in FCT schools, Bako stated that by standard, maximum of 35 to 40 students surposed to be in a class room, stating that because of influx of people into Abuja, it became difficult to maintain that standard.

“The issue of Abuja is a peculiar one in the sense that people come into Abuja every day, and because of that, we cannot meet up with that standard. Most of our schools, especially those in the urban area are highly populated. Facility made for 50 students, 200 people will be using it”

Bako said that the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC is however trying its best as their is intervention in the areas of infrastructural development, provision o instructural materials among others.

On the basic qualification of teachers, he explained that for one to be a professional teacher, such person must have educational qualification, adding that if one is a graduate of any discipline and he wants to be a teacher, he has to go for post-graduate in education to be a professional teacher.
