As coronavirus pandemic continued to spread across the world, the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA has appealed to governments at all level to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, PPE to all health workers in Delta State in particular and anaigeria in general to avoid contracting COVID-19.
The Delta State Chairman of NMA, Dr. Ekeneam Omo made the appeal in Asaba while briefing newsmen on the coronavirus pandemic.
Omo listed the PPE to include minimum of N95 facemasks, gloves, face shield/goggles, and aprons as routine, while HAZMAT suit should be made available for use by them when deemed absolutely necessary.
Dr. Omo recalled three doctors that had died as a result of the treatment of patients with coronavirus in states of Ondo, Lagos and Katsina.
According to NMA Chairman, In the light of the very high risk involved in the management of COVID-19 patients and other infectious diseases and to ensure continued commitment of doctors to the discharge of optimal patient care in the face of these risks.
The Association also demanded the upward review of hazard allowance of all doctors and Health Care Workers from the meagre N5,000, saing that government should make it a percentage of consolidated basic salary.
Omo said the constitution of compensation package for all doctors and health care workers who die or suffer disability for attending to patients suffering from COVID-19 infections, should be in the form of life and disability insurance.
He however stated that the Association has mandated all doctors in the state not to go near any COVID-19 positive patient without the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
The doctors therefore, advised the general public that COVID-19 “is not a political scam. We plead with you to please obey the Stay-At-Home instruction as it is not punishment but one of the critical sacrifices we all have to make towards containing the spread of this virus”.
